Guide for FiveM server owners
GTA 6 vs FiveM Roleplay: What Changes for Server Owners
A calm, factual look at what GTA 6 means for FiveM roleplay servers: what Rockstar has confirmed, what is still unknown, and what a sensible server owner does now.
Every roleplay Discord has the same thread: "Is FiveM dead when GTA 6 comes out?" The short answer is that nobody outside Rockstar knows yet. The longer answer is more useful, because there is a lot you can plan without knowing.
This article separates what is confirmed from what is guessed, and ends with a plan for server owners. It was written in 2026, before the announced release date, and is based on public announcements only. Things will change. When they do, trust Rockstar’s own posts over anything you read here or in a Discord screenshot.
We make scripts for GTA V FiveM. We are not affiliated with Rockstar Games, Take-Two or Cfx.re, and we have no inside information.
What is confirmed
These points come from Rockstar’s own announcements and trailers:
- GTA 6 (GTA VI) is set in Leonida, a fictional state with a modern Vice City.
- Release: Rockstar has announced GTA 6 for 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The date has moved before. Re-check it on Rockstar’s site before you rely on it.
- PC: at the time of writing, Rockstar has not announced a PC release date. Past Rockstar games came to PC later than consoles, but that is history, not a promise.
- Cfx.re is part of Rockstar. In 2023 Rockstar announced that the team behind FiveM and RedM had joined the company. FiveM kept running for GTA V after that.
That is roughly the full list of facts that matter for server owners.
What is not confirmed
Everything else is open. In particular, Rockstar has not announced:
- whether GTA 6 will support private or community servers at all,
- whether FiveM or anything like it will exist for GTA 6,
- what the online mode will allow in terms of custom content,
- whether roleplay communities will get official tools.
You will see confident claims about all of these. Treat them as opinions. The fact that Cfx.re is part of Rockstar tells us that Rockstar takes community servers seriously on GTA V. It does not tell us what they will do with GTA 6.
Three scenarios, and what each means for you
Rather than guess, plan for all three. None of them requires you to do anything drastic today.
Scenario 1: GTA V FiveM carries on as it is
GTA 6 launches on consoles. PC players wait. FiveM keeps running on GTA V for years, because the community, the tools and thousands of resources are there.
What it means for you: your server keeps its players, and you compete with GTA 6 for their time for a few months. Servers that feel fresh do better in that period. This is where a GTA 6 inspired look helps: it gives players some of the mood they are excited about, on the server they already know.
Scenario 2: some form of community servers arrive for GTA 6
At some point Rockstar offers a way to run community servers on GTA 6, perhaps with rules and limits we do not know yet.
What it means for you: your GTA V resources would most likely not carry over as they are. Different game, different natives, different rules. What carries over is your community, your rules, your lore and your staff. Those are worth documenting now.
Scenario 3: no community servers for GTA 6 for a long time
GTA 6 online stays closed to custom servers.
What it means for you: GTA V FiveM stays the place for serious roleplay. The servers that invest in quality now keep their lead.
In all three, the same actions make sense.
What changes for server owners in practice
Player numbers will move around
Expect a dip around the launch, when players try the new game, and some of them return later. This is normal for any big release. Plan events and updates for the weeks after launch, not the week of it.
Expectations will rise
Players will compare your city to what they see in GTA 6. You can’t match its engine. You can match its tone: a busy, sunny, loud city with things to do. Our Vice City checklist lists practical steps, and GTA 6 features you can already add explains which ideas are realistic.
Legal lines stay where they are
GTA 6 assets are Rockstar’s. You can’t use its map, characters, vehicles, music or logos on a GTA V server, before or after release. Ripped content breaks Cfx.re’s platform rules. Call your server "GTA 6 inspired", never "GTA 6".
"GTA 6 FiveM" scams will increase
Expect scripts, maps and servers sold as "GTA 6 on FiveM". There is no such thing. If a seller claims to have GTA 6 content, they either do not, or they are selling something they have no right to. Neither is good for you.
A plan you can start this month
1. Document your community
Write down your rules, your lore, your factions, your staff roles and your onboarding. Keep them in a shared document, not only in Discord messages. If you ever move to a new platform, this is what you bring.
2. Own your code where it matters
If a script is central to your server (your economy, your HUD, your jobs), prefer code you can read and change. Escrowed code keeps working only as long as the seller keeps it working. Our article on escrow vs open source FiveM scripts explains the trade-off. All our scripts come with the full source.
3. Clean up performance
A GTA 6 launch is a good deadline for a performance pass. Remove resources nobody uses, update the rest, and check idle costs. FiveM resmon basics shows how.
4. Refresh the look
Replace the HUD, fix the lighting and weather, and make the first five minutes shine. These are visible changes that make returning players stay. See the FiveM HUD guide.
5. Build systems that create stories
Players come back for scenes, not for features. Duo jobs, planned heists, nightlife, an in-game social feed. Living NPCs and AI can help, if you keep an eye on the cost.
6. Keep a test server
Big releases bring rushed updates from everyone: frameworks, resources, artifacts. Test updates before they hit your live server. If you are unsure how to install things cleanly, follow how to install a FiveM script.
What to tell your players
Your players read the same rumours you do. A short, honest message in your Discord saves a lot of repeated questions. Something like this works:
- What is true today. "Our server runs on GTA V FiveM. GTA 6 is a separate game, and Rockstar has not announced anything about FiveM or roleplay servers for it."
- What you will do. "We keep running and updating the server. If community servers for GTA 6 are ever announced, we will look at them and tell you."
- What you will not do. "We will not use GTA 6 assets, and we will not call this a GTA 6 server."
- What is coming. A date for your next update or event, ideally in the weeks after the GTA 6 launch, when some players come back.
Pin it, and update it when Rockstar says something new. It is also worth asking staff to point to that message instead of guessing in chat.
What we are doing
We will keep building scripts for GTA V FiveM, inspired by GTA 6, for as long as roleplay servers run on it. Our scripts ship with the full source, so if you ever want to port your ideas elsewhere, you can at least read how they work. You can browse them by framework: QBCore scripts, QBox scripts, ESX scripts, see them grouped on GTA 6 style scripts for FiveM, or see all FiveM scripts. The free scripts show our code style, and bundles cost less than buying scripts one by one. If you have a question about your setup, ask support.
When Rockstar says something new, re-read their announcement and adjust your plan. Do not adjust it for rumours.
Questions
Will FiveM work with GTA 6?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows. Rockstar has not announced anything about FiveM or community servers for GTA 6. FiveM currently runs on GTA V.
Is FiveM going to shut down when GTA 6 comes out?
There is no announcement saying so. FiveM kept running for GTA V after Cfx.re joined Rockstar in 2023. Plan for GTA V FiveM to keep running, and watch Rockstar's official news.
When does GTA 6 come out?
Rockstar has announced 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Check Rockstar's official site for the current date, since it has changed before.
Can I move my FiveM scripts to GTA 6 later?
Probably not as they are. GTA 6 is a different game, and any community server system for it would have its own tools. Your community, rules and design ideas carry over; your Lua files likely would need a rewrite.
Should I wait for GTA 6 before starting a server?
No. If you want to run a roleplay server, GTA V FiveM is the platform that exists today. Build your community now. It is the part you keep whatever happens.
